IT Project - Tutor brendan.coulson@castlecollege.ac.uk
Learners will be able to identify an IT project from any area, however the project must have a business dimension and be sufficiently complex to allow planning and management to take place. It must also allow learners the opportunity to manage some resources, in particular and at least, the time allocated for completion. The unit gives learners the opportunity to develop or extend skills such as analysis, synthesis, evaluation and independence. It also enables them to more fully understand, through practice and application, other IT related skills and knowledge.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of this unit a learner should:
1. Understand how projects are specified and managed
2. Be able to plan an IT project
3. Be able to implement an IT project
4 .Be able to test, document and review an IT project
Learners should be aware that whilst there will be plenty of support during the IT project unit, you will be expected to carryout independent learning and use resources that have already be allocated to you from previous units. All the materials that will be used during the delivery of this unit will be available on this wiki page. We will also upload any other materials that we think might be of use to you during this unit. It is worth noting that there are other materials available throughout this Btec National Diploma Wikipage.
Week One & Two: - Task 1a,b,c This first week will be a introductory week into the learning outcomes and what is required to complete your IT project. During this week we will be discussing methodolgoies, project lifecycle stages and tools. A discussion will take place based around why projects fail and what can be carriedout to try and minimise a project failing. The final discussion points and activities will be based around using MS Project and writing up a Product specification. Critical path analysis, Gantt and Pert chart practical activities will also take place.
You will also be required to complete any outstanding work from week 1. There will be discussion and activities based around risk assessment.
Project management can be a difficult concept to grasp, therefore these lessons will concentrate on using project management software and the tools associated to it i.e. CPA, Gantt charts.
During any project it is vital that all the stakeholders are involved throughout the project for it to be a success. During these lessons we will be discussing communication issues with stakeholders and keeping a log of communication. Further revision of the user requirements will also take place. We will also be looking at project specification further, we will be aiming to produce a project specification to meet the user requirements.
Week Six: (First Hand in) It is so important to ensure that the database that you have been implementing is fit for purpose. To help you to achieve this we will be covering unit testing and system testing (making use of test plans and logs). Some project demonstrations will also be taking place during these lessons
Session Seven Presentation will be delivered to discuss Binary code, Class led activity to covert binary into information and a Learner led activity to covert binary into information. Learners will have the opportunity to catch up on any work not completed within the sessions. Learners who have completed all work will make a start on assignment two. Week Eight: (Final Hand in) These lessons will be all workshop lessons to give you class time to complete your IT Project, support will be provided to you throughout these lessons. Some project demonstrations will also be taking place during these lessons.
The final lesson will involve a unit review where you will be able to discuss the delivery of the project unit.
Week Nine
A discussion will take place around normalisation.
DAN / DAVE WILL BE COVERING THESE LESSONS - 8th January & 15th January – To do list: THESE LESSONS CAN BE USED AS CATCH UP LESSONS FOR OTHER UNITS OTHERWISE COMPLETE THE TASKS BELOW FOR IT PROJECT:
Complete Task One Complete Task Two – Project specification – loads of stuff on the wiki Task 3F – write a report justifying the tools you are going to use i.e. MS Project, Gantt Chart, CPA, ERD Diagram, Flow Chart, MS Access etc. Task 4a
Design in word the customer order input form, Supplier and products input forms and a customer invoice. ERD diagram and description Data Dictionaries for your scenarios – see your normalisation documents and use 3rd normal form tables – description of what is meant by 3rd normal form Flowchart and description – to represent the process of adding a customer to the database but checking to see if the customer already exists. Once confirmed you need to be able to add orders to that customer account and send confirmation to the customer. Task 3b Create a log – see wiki that records what issues you have had and what issues you think you might have on the project
